NYC Brownstone - Living Room
The couple wanted to create a warm and cozy environment with the elegant period working fireplace serving as the room’s welcoming focal point. They also needed to integrate a large collection of books and audio equipment. Because they entertained frequently, they also needed a space to accommodate an overnight guest.
Custom built bookcases were installed to frame both sides of the fireplace. Audio and video equipment were concealed in custom-built cabinetry below the bookcase. A large framed mirror was added above the fireplace to complete the wall and bring additional light and dimension to the room. New marble stonework was installed around the fireplace and on the window sills. Large custom window shutters were also added to restore the look of the building’s original window design. Anchoring the dining area are two drop leaf tables, one large and one small, that can be opened for meals or to provide serving stations for larger scale entertaining. An antique sleigh bed is tucked under the eaves to provide sleeping accommodations for guests as well as additional seating in the fireplace conversation area.

NYC Brownstone - Bedroom
Because the bedroom was unusually large, it also needed to provide multiple functions. As in the living room, a large working fireplace became the focal point – anchoring the half of the room which would serve as the owners’ home office. On one side of the fireplace a custom-built desk and bookcase were installed for the working area; on the opposite side, an antique armoire, providing much needed storage space. A small sitting area for reading, conversation, and meetings was created in front of the fireplace. Additional storage space was created by building out a closet by the doorway.

NYC Brownstone - Kitchen
A very small space with very limited countertops posed challenges for the couple, who enjoy daily cooking and weekly entertaining. To make the kitchen more cook-friendly, a large double door refrigerator and broom closet were eliminated, opening up space to create a sizable butcher block counter workspace with large open shelving above and side-by-side refrigerator/freezer units below. The cabinetry, countertops and flooring were designed so the kitchen flows more seamlessly into the living room area.
